According to the English-speaking internet, the first documented tornado in Asia was in Kolkata in 1838. I have my doubts, as tornadoes have been occurring in Asia since long before the British arrived to do their own damage.

Also, I'm less interested in historical documentation of specific tornadoes, and more interested in what the character I'm writing would know about them.

The context is that it's Ancient Fantasy China. The character sees something that looks very much like a tornado coming over a hill. What does he know about it? Has he heard of whirlwinds? What does he think might be the cause or force behind it? Are there any texts he might be familiar with (he's very well-educated)?

He does live in a region where tornadoes occur, though there's no reason to think he's seen one before himself.

The year is impossible to pin down because the setting is often deliberately anachronistic to subvert attempts to pin it down to a specific year, and historical details are based mostly on vibes. I'd say 200-1000AD is a safe range, but any information from before modern scientific understanding of tornadoes could be helpful.
